The TRUTH about a juice cleanse.
Part One

This is Part One of a series of articles we will bring you about the principles of cleansing, particularly using juices!

Juicing Cleansing and Weight Loss - the question I am most asked!

Alot of Schkinny Maninny customers decide to cleanse to lose weight.  Invariably, they do!  For those with more to lose, the results will be more remarkable than those with less to lose.  On average, our customers lose 2-3 kgs in the week, however, one of cleansers last week lost 4 kgs, and another only lost 1kg.

Despite the figures, the result is a boost in self esteem and an amazing sense of accomplishment.  Getting quick results is a fantastic motivation to change their lives.  Now, generally we are not talking about deep spiritual changes (but that could happen!), but little changes in your life that increase overall healthy, weight and energy levels!

Juice cleansing and your metabolism - will my metabolism slow down?

The fear is that juice cleansing will slow down the metabolic rate, and then afterward you will get more weight gain than before your cleanse.  If you are reducing your calorie intake, this initial reduction will slow your base metabolic rate.  However, cleansing will bring health that will increase metabolic performance and energy output.  Plus, our cleanse still has 1/2kg to 1kg of fruit and vegetables in EACH juice.  This is not the way to deprive your body, if low calorie dieting is your thing.

Stay tuned to our next newsletter for Part Two in our Juice Cleanse Series.

Eat yourself SKINNY this Spring!

Combining the anti-aging super powers of ferulic acid and the appetite-dominating abilities of protein and fiber, there is a salad that could help you look better in that bikini faster than your think!  And it is easier to make than your standard sandwich.

Corn and bean salad!

Yep, those sweet little corn kernels have an impressive phytochemical that’s credited with thwarting a host of diseases, and it may even be an age fighter. And because beans are so full of protein and fiber, people who regularly eat them tend to weigh less on average.

Veggie Goodness
So skip both the potato and the macaroni salads this weekend. Let corn and beans be your foundation for a delicious dish that helps you get your summer bod.  Not sure how to throw them together?  A super easy, quick and tasty salad that we love is Tuna and Bean Salad.  Check out the recipe below.

Bean Me Up
Another benefit of beans — besides filling you up without fattening you up — is their high antioxidant capacity. Especially dark beans. And according to some studies, people who eat beans typically weigh as much as 3 kgs less than those who avoid them. (Reference: Chef MD’s Big Book of Culinary Medicine)

Check out this easy recipe!

Right it is official!  The Winter clothes are in storage, and the Summer dresses are back in the closet.

Schkinny News - Stay healthy WITHOUT health foods!

Stay healthy WITHOUT health foods!

Today’s list of superfoods is very impressive — it seems as though every day something else gets the illustrious title.  Eat right and you can dramatically slow your rate of aging and dim your risk of disease. The trouble? Not everyone can eat these superfoods.

Whether you are allergic to nuts, don’t drink wine, or would just absolutely, positively never voluntarily chew and swallow anything containing fish or flax, you’re not shut out of the health benefits. Here’s what to eat or drink instead:

The superfood: Alcohol
Why it’s good:
Sipping wine or beer in moderation may reduce your odds for heart disease by more than 25%.
What to have instead: Put a plant-based “rainbow” on your table. You’ll get the heart-protecting compounds in red wine — resveratrol, quercetin, and catechins — from blueberries, red grape juice (made totally from grapes), apples, onions, grapefruit, black tea, and even peanuts.

These compounds help prevent risky blood clots, stop free radical damage better than vitamins C and E alone, stave off heart rhythm disorders, and counter the inflammation that makes a mess of blood vessel walls. Add fish, dark chocolate, garlic, and nuts (especially walnuts) to your meals and you can cut your risk for heart disease by nearly 75% — without a drop of the hard stuff.

The superfood: Fish
Why it’s good:
Having fatty, nonfried fish three times a week gives your body a good squirt of omega-3 fatty acids, the superfat that acts like a handyman inside your arteries and also helps with immune function and brain repair. It lowers triglycerides and blood pressure, makes blood less sticky (clot-prone), and cuts your odds of out-of-sync heartbeats (arrhythmias). Wild salmon, mahimahi, catfish, flounder, and tilapia are top sources for the two omega-3s your body loves best: DHA and EPA.
What to have instead: Start with DHA-rich foods, such as walnuts (2.5 grams of omega-3 per ounce) and omega-3-enriched eggs and orange juice. But because it’s hard to get enough through diet, reach for fish-oil supplements. Pop enough to get 3 grams of DHA and EPA a day. Or pop 600 milligrams of pills containing DHA from a vegetarian source like algae (that’s where fish get their DHA from) — these are much smaller pills and have no fish taste or smell.

The superfood: Nuts
Why they’re good:
These tiny power foods are packed with fiber, protein, and an impressive mix of good fats (especially walnuts) that help lower your risk of diabetes, drop blood pressure, and cool chronic inflammation. An ounce a day can lower the rate of heart disease by as much as 40%. And nut-eaters lose more weight than nut-avoiders — presumably because nuts curb your appetite. Plus, eating nuts before high-carbohydrate dishes (pasta, corn on the cob) helps keep your blood sugar steady, not soaring.
What to have instead: If you’re allergic to nuts, get their monounsaturated fats from avocados, canola and olive oils, olives, and even dark chocolate. But if you’re only allergic to the calories in nuts, give ’em a second chance. Have a small handful every day — a half-ounce has only about 100 calories.

The superfood: Skim Milk
Why it’s good:
It’s a rich source of bone-protecting calcium, vitamin D, and other minerals.
What to have instead: If you’re lactose intolerant, try a brand that adds lactase — the enzyme your body needs to digest milk sugars — or take lactase tablets before you drink milk.

If you just don’t do milk, then aim for 1,500 milligrams of calcium per day from other sources. Also, be sure to get 400 milligrams of magnesium and 1000 international units (IU) of vitamin D; 1,200 if you’re over age 60. For supplements, we prefer calcium citrate to calcium carbonate. Calcium citrate is more easily absorbed, so you can take it anytime, not just with meals. (Your body can only absorb up to 600 milligrams of calcium in 2 hours, so keep citrate chewables in the car, and pop one every time you turn over the ignition.)

Whenever you can, load up on other calcium-rich foods. Black-eyed peas, baked beans, and canned salmon with the bones (they’re tiny and safe) are good, and a cup of boiled collard greens or spinach packs as much calcium as a glass of skim milk.

The superfood: Flax
Why it’s good:
This little seed has a near-perfect balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids — a balance that’s missing in many modern diets. Getting too many 6s encourages inflammation, which ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), a good fat in flax, fights.
What to have instead: Canola oil, walnuts, brussels sprouts, kale, spinach, and salad greens. Simply fit one of these — or fish, fish oil, or capsules of DHA-omega-3 from algae, or an omega-3-enriched egg and glass of OJ — into your diet every day to keep your good-fat seesaw in balance.

Spring is just perfect to get yourself excited about looking great in Summer, here is a rundown from a Schkinny Cleanser…

Well, nearly there now - two bottles to go and that’s a wrap for the 5 day cleanse!

It has been amazing - MUCH better than I thought it would be as I have done many different types of cleanses before and overall eat and drink in the healthy top percentile anyway!

BUT - it still had amazing results for me - so much so that I would like to do a 3 day cleanse starting on Monday June 8 and going to Wed 10th, I know it is soon but we are going away on the 15th and I would really love to feel this good as I step onto the plane! My husband may even join me!

The bad and the good of it.

Monday is easy really, but definately Tuesday is hard! Everything else you mention, getting over the hunger, feeling revitalised , smelling things better etc etc are all true and really do happen.

Two things I am amazed about:

1. How can you have such regular and LARGE bowel actions when all you do is drink 6 bottles of juice - amazing?

2. And OH WOW! I felt and now feel - FABULOUS!! THIS is THE answer to eternal youth, without question! I am over 50 and feel better than I did in my 20’s! Now that’s a result worth having! I will be doing this cleanse on a regular basis for the rest of my life and have already booked my next one!

And a bonus third point - for over two years I have dieted and exercised to get my wieght below a certain point. I am not overweight and dont really need to loose weight but I feel better below a certain weight and just could NOT get there no matter what I tried, gym, pilates, even a nutritionist!

Guess what! At the beginning of this cleanse I was above it and at the end I am below it!! I am talking about less than 2 kilo’s here so by no means saying that in 5 days this is a way to loose wieght, but no matter what I did I could not get below that magic number - and now I have and it feels fabulous! Thank you!

Confession though - I took you seriously about being kind to myself. I scrubed with the loofah each day, went to bed early every night, had a detox seaweed treatment and added a bath to my pre-dinner routine!

So guys, get used to delivering to our house - you’ll be doing it alot!

Many thanks, hope I have convinced some more people to do it too!

Foods to Fight Belly Fat…

Foods that FIGHT belly fat!

Did you know that besides doing wonders for your health, a certain nutrient group might also help keep your pants size down and your belt comfortable?

It’s true. Flavonoids — those antioxidant-like compounds found in fruits, veggies, chocolate, tea, and wine — seemed to help ward off belly fat in a 14-year study.

Multitasking Flavonoids

Specifically, catechins, flavonols, and flavones — types of flavonoids — may help curb belly bulge by improving the body’s metabolic profile, the researchers noted. So where can you get your fair share? The study participants got most of theirs from pears, apples, tea, chocolate, broad beans, onions, leeks, and sweet peppers. Pretty tasty choices. Try adding some to the menu tonight with these recipes: Got some chicken in the freezer? Got an apple rolling around the crisper drawer? Great! Then grab some leeks on the way home and make this:
Saute of Chicken with Apples & Leeks. Need a yummy side dish that’s full of flavonoids but isn’t salad? Try this: Pear & Red Onion Gratin.

Low-Cal Delights

Interestingly, only the women in the study experienced a waistline benefit from flavonoids. But because flavonoid-rich foods like fruits and veggies are often low in calories, they’re still a smart choice for anyone who is weight conscious.

“Sorry for the delay in sending this email to you but after finishing my detox I was straight into RAFW and only now just catching my breath.

I am emailing to say how wonderful the detox was and how great I felt after it.  It really is so good.

So good in fact that I want to do it again – and a girlfriend of mine wants to join me.”

Saute of Chicken with Apples & Leeks

4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, trimmed
3 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
1/4 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground pepper to taste
2 large leeks, white parts only, washed and cut into julienne strips (2 cups)
2 large cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons minced fresh rosemary or 1/2 teaspoon dried
1/4 cup cider vinegar
2 firm tart apples, such as Granny Smith, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
1 cup reduced-sodium chicken stock

1. Place chicken breasts between 2 sheets of plastic wrap. Use a rolling pin or a small heavy pot to pound them to a thickness of 1cm.
2. Heat 1 1/2 teaspoons oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium-high heat. Season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper and add to the pan. Cook until browned on both sides, 4 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate and keep warm.
3. Reduce the heat to low. Add the remaining 1 1/2 teaspoons oil and leeks. Cook, stirring, until the leeks are soft, about 5 minutes. Add garlic, sugar and rosemary and cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes more. Increase the heat to medium-high, stir in vinegar and cook until most of the liquid has evaporated.
4. Add apples and stock and cook, stirring once or twice, until the apples are tender, about 3 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and return the chicken and any juices to the pan. Simmer gently until the chicken is heated through. Serve immediately.

Pear & Red Onion Gratin

1 large red onion
3 ripe Bosc pears
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme
1/4 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground pepper to taste
1 cup coarse dry gluten-freebreadcrumbs, OR whole-wheat
1/3 cup grated Parmesan

1. Fill a large bowl three-quarters full with water; add a handful of ice cubes. Cut onion into 16 wedges, place in a strainer and lower into the water. Let stand for 20 minutes.
2. Preheat oven to 400°F.
3. Halve and core each pear; cut each half into 6 slices. Drain the onion wedges well and place them in a glass baking dish along with the pear slices, 1 tablespoon oil, thyme, salt and a grinding of pepper; toss to combine. Cover with foil.
4. Roast for 30 minutes, stirring twice.
5. Meanwhile, combine breadcrumbs and cheese in a small bowl. Drizzle with the remaining 2 tablespoons oil; stir to combine. Remove the pan from the oven, sprinkle the crumb mixture evenly over the gratin, return to the oven and roast until the breadcrumbs are well browned, 20 to 30 minutes more. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Your skin LOVES carrots!

It is warm and sunny outside, and I started buying summer dresses on the weekend!  So it is perfect time to start thinking about what is happening under the payers.  Spring is the time for cleaning and lets start with your biggest - and most visible - organ.  For healthy, glowing skin, make like a rabbit and eat your carrots.

The crunchy snack and Bugs Bunny prop is loaded with vitamin A — a good-for-your-eyes antioxidant that appears to be great for skin, too. It helps balance the pH of the skin’s surface, making it slightly acidic. That’s good news, because slightly acidic skin fends off bacterial invaders.

In addition to getting enough vitamin A in your diet, keep an eye on how much fat you eat. A recent study suggests that eating too much fat will suck moisture from your skin, which means fine lines and wrinkles have no place to hide.

Should you drink more water? It can’t hurt. Water provides your skin with more moisture, and it helps balance pH. But there’s no reason to overdo it.

So what kind of pH do you want, when it comes to your skin? Ideally, it should be slightly acidic: A pH ranging from 5.4 to 5.9 is good. When skin pH is outside this zone, it can interfere with normal skin functions, such as protecting against bacteria and repairing or protecting itself against damage.

Other nutrients that might affect skin acidity: calcium and beta cryptoxanthin — but only in men, according to a recent study. Researchers speculate that hormonal differences between genders may be the reason certain nutrients affect men’s skin, but not women’s.

So stick with carrots in your salads, your snacks, your sandwiches, and of course, your juices!

Did you feel that warmth on Saturday?  Spring cleaning is officially on the agenda!

Still thinking about the cleanse… Read what Julia thinks….

I just wanted to let you know that my mum and I are so happy that we completed the five day cleanse successfully! We were on the verge of giving up on day three but forced ourselves to power through and the results have been great. My boyfriend thought I had a facial yesterday because I look so fresh and I generally feel rejuvenated and more energetic than I have been in a long time. On top of it all I’ve lost about two kilos, so I’ve officially become a schkinny detox convert.

Thanks schkinny!

The SKINNY Drink
Have a little fat you’d like to lose? Maybe now is a good time to turn on the kettle and pour yourself a cup of this: white tea.

Made from the buds and early leaves of the same plants used to make green and black teas, white tea may have special fat-thwarting powers, a new study suggests.

Fat-Blasting Brew
Fat cells increase or decrease in size, according to your weight. And in a lab study, human fat cells treated with white tea extract accumulated significantly less fat. In fact, the white tea extract reduced the incorporation of fat by as much as 70 percent! The tea also seemed to stimulate the breakdown of fat from mature cells.

Why White Whittles
Because white tea is less processed than green or black tea, it has more of certain active compounds, like epigallocatechin-3-gallate (an antioxidant) and methylxanthines (theobromine and caffeine). And researchers suspect that these compounds influence fat-cell metabolism by acting on the expression of certain genes. But human studies will be needed to confirm it.

The Taste Test
You can get White tea from your supermarket, we have tried the Lotus Peak Natural Vanilla White Tea and the Twinings White Tea.  The Twinings is far more drinkable, and tastes very similar to a Japanese Green Tea.  TRY IT!!

Breathe better (and lose some waistline) – Fibre in your diet

Wish you didn’t get so winded when hiking up the stairs? Then start your day with oats. Or bran. Or anything high in fiber.

It may not give you the lung capacity of Michael Phelps, but it could help you breathe easier. New research shows that dietary fiber may give lungs a leg up.

Breathe Easier
In a study, people who ate at least 27 grams of fiber per day had better lung capacity than people who got less than 10 grams. The high-fiber eaters were also 15 percent less likely to develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, an irreversible lung condition that makes it hard to breathe. Fiber may protect lungs by reducing tissue-damaging inflammation. The antioxidants in fiber probably help protect lung cells, too. Are you getting enough fiber?

Fiber: Wonder Food?

What else is fiber good for? Plenty:

§             Your waistline. Want to lose a few before Summer? Fiber helps fill you up, so you munch less.
§
Your blood pressure. When your blood pressure creeps up, knock it back down with extra fiber.
§             Your bowels. It’s no secret: Fiber helps keep you regular.

Easy ways to add more fibre to your day:
Grab a five bean mix from the supermarket and throw some through your salad.
Try to eat at least 2 pieces of fruit every day
Buy some pysllium husk from your supermarket, add one spoonful to your cereal every morning.

I have to say that I really loved it

Thank you so much for the four day cleanse. I have to say that I really loved it- and wished it went on for longer. I have stuck to fruit and vegetables for the last few days and feel pretty good. I am not going to have cheese, dairy or meat for a little while. I have had some canned tuna tonight with the vegies.

So, the four day cleanse:

To begin with I was really hungry and had the first 3 juices by midday and tried to have a break in the afternoon as I knew I would be hungry at night. I got through the first day without too much of a headache- there was a dull ache but it wasn’t too bad and I was  surprised to also have a runny nose for 5 minutes on the first day. The first day was definitely the hardest- especially as I cook for my 18 month old during the day, do the shopping etc. I went to bed quite early (no time to rest/ take it easy during the day with a 5  and 18 month old)- felt a little grumpy and irritable but it wasn’t too bad.

Day 2 was better, still hungry at various times and became aware of how much I pick during the day. I drank lots of water and herbal tea for the four days- really filled me up and urine was clear by day two.

Day 3 I was really getting into it- beginning to think about the food I normally put into my mouth and how much I can do without it. I was feeling pretty please about myself for being so strict and sticking to the juice diet.

By Day 4 I have to say that I had adjusted to having the 6 juices and had the last 3 from 5pm onwards. Day 5 ..I was missing the juices!

So all in all I was surprised that I didn’t get more side affects, but I suppose there are so many goodies in the juices that it is not as if I was starving my body. I didn’t have time to have a bath but had one 2 days after the detox with the white stuff. The emails sent through daily were really great and help you to stay on track and remind you how good it is for you.

We will definitely do it again

I would like you to know that both me and my husband take my hat of to your business…so professionally done and also nice juices..(The only one that I really didn’t like at all was the squash.

We will definitely do it again in september
