I am not a huge fan of chemical sunscreens. Something just feels a bit unnatural about putting something on your skin that needs 15-20 minutes to “soak” in, then before it works. The soaking in seems a bit strange. I understand how it works, but then we need to stop seeing our skin as a barrier and more of an extension to the internal system, as it is all connected.
So when you think about something needed to “soak in” to work, my mind goes straight to the thought of, “well, when does this get into my blood stream, if it needs to soak in?” It’s a little bit the same as makeup and moisturisers, if you don’t think it is safe to eat, then why would it be safe to put on your skin? I am more of a fan of physical zinc sunscreens that more “sit” on your skin to protect your skin. I have yet to find one that I think is perfect, as there is a lot of questions about nano particles being very dangerous too.
What if your diet could be an even more effective sunscreen?
My posts never cease to mention the word “antioxidants” as they are a critical part of a healthy body. Interestingly there was a study, done a long time ago, done in Australia, that showed a dramatic DECREASE in cancer cell production from an increase in eating omega 3 fatty acids. In this study, the omega-3 fatty acid known as DHA not only stopped cancer cells from continuing their production cycle, it also resulted in apoptosis, which means the cancer cells died. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10945621?dopt=Abstract%20and%20http://www.pnas.org/content/98/13/7510.full. Another study had a similar conclusion. http://www.pnas.org/content/98/13/7510.full
Sources of omega 3, fish are great source, but a lot of fish is full of mercury too, so eating fish every day may not be the best solution. Plant based sources include chia seeds, walnuts and flaxseeds. But an amazing plant based source is algae, which is things like spirulina and chlorella. These algae’s contain ALA which is the Omega 3 found in plants, while EPA and DHA are the Omega 3’s typically found in seafood. Imagine if the news tonight ran a story about a new cheap wonder drug that could PREVENT you from getting cancer and heart disease. What do you think would happen? Would you run out and grab it, for you and everyone you know? I am sure most people would. Now what if I tell you that this affordable wonder drug ALREADY exists. And it is available to everyone, everyday for most people, right around the corner.
The wonder drug is called: FRUIT AND VEGETABLES. A number of studies have shown a significant link between fruit and vegetable consumption and reduced cancer and cardiovascular mortality. Vegetables may have a stronger association with mortality than fruit. Consumption of vegetables or salad were most protective, while frozen/canned fruit consumption was apparently associated with increased mortality. This study adjusted for a number of other factors such as age, sex, social class, education, BMI, alcohol consumption and physical activity. So eating at least seven portions of fresh fruits and vegetables per day may lower your risk of dying from cancer by up to 15% https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24687909
Another study found that total fruit and vegetable intake was inversely associated with risk of cardiovascular disease, this means that eating more fruits and veg may LOWER your risk of developing heart disease. Heart disease is the biggest killer of people around the world and yet doesn’t get the publicity that cancer does. Of the food groups analyzed, green leafy vegetable intake showed the strongest inverse association with major chronic disease and cardiovascular disease. It looks like just increasing your servings by only one more day you can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.
Easy ways to increase your vegetable intake:
This past week my partner was away for work and I have finished breast feeding so thought it would be the perfect time to get my cleanse on. There a lot of obvious benefits to a juice fast, like all liquid to be easily assimilated into the body, allowing the body to detoxify and cleanse naturally and boosting my system with massive amounts of fruits and vegetables. I know exactly how much produce goes into each juice, so when you are drinking the juices it just feels good to know I am putting all the right things in. But there were a couple of other benefits that I had completely forgotten about:
1. I forgot how nice it was to have someone else prepare my food. There was no thought, no effort, nothing involved. With an almost 1 year old and a full time business, it is easy to neglect me in the whole picture, so having everything pre-prepared was so GOOD. I didn't have to think about the babies food, milk, snacks, nappies, clothes, toys, etc, then think, what I am going to eat/drink today. It was such a pleasure to be totally taken care of, like my fairy god mother totally had my back for a week.
2. I forgot how much extra time you have when you don’t have to prepare meals. I had such a productive work week and got so many jobs finished because I wasn’t spending the 40-1hr prepping, making and cleaning dishes that is involved every night. It was such a good feeling. Like a mini holiday. Time is the only thing finite in our lifetimes, everything else is infinite, so having a little bit more of it to be productive, read my book, do some exercise, watch the baby explore and discover or just be was a little luxury.

Being pregnant and desperately wanting our new little addition to come out and meet us, I have been drinking a lot raspberry leaf tea. It is supposed to help tone the uterus to make contractions smoother and more consistent. So it got me thinking about what other teas are good for other parts of the your body. As most of your would know, we supply a detox tea blend with our cleanses of 3 days or longer. The blend we use has dandelion leaf, fennel seed, celery leaf and peppermint leaf. The dandelion leaf is reported to help support kidney function, fennel seed is very good for reducing bloating as well as being a mild diuretic to help flush toxins out. Peppermint leaf positively supports digestion by helping to break down fats and reduce bad cholesterol. Decreased cholesterol levels reduce the work load required from the liver. Here are some other popular (and easy to drink) herbal remedies that could help you feel better on the inside:
Chamomile tea which for me is the go to “before bed tea” chamomile has a mild sedative effect, but it also could help you manage anxiety and stress. It could also be very effective in treating stomach and intestinal cramps as it does contain fairly strong antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents.
Ginseng tea may help to improve the immune system by increasing the number of immune cells in the blood. In one study 227 people got either ginseng or placebo for 12 weeks, and got a flu vaccine after 4 weeks. The number of colds and flu were two-thirds lower in the group that took ginseng. Ginseng is also popular as a natural appetite suppressant.
Rooibios (pronounced Roy-boss) tea is a great alternative to normal black tea. It has a similar taste to black tea, so can be had with milk and sugar but it is totally caffeine free. Plus it is loaded with essential minerals potassium, manganese, fluoride, iron, copper, zinc, magnesium and calcium. Three of these minerals – fluoride, manganese and calcium – promote a healthy bone structure.
Lemongrass tea possesses anti-hyperlipidemic and anti-hypercholesterolemic properties that support healthy cholesterol levels. It is possible that the regular consumption of lemongrass tea could have significant results in sustaining healthy levels of triglycerides and reducing the bad cholesterol in the body.
Activated charcoal is a medicine and drug sponge. It’s not absorbed into the body, and is put into the gastrointestinal tract to reduce the absorption of drugs and other poisons after they have been ingested, but before they have been absorbed into the body. While the overall effectiveness of charcoal isn’t well documented for all drugs and poisons, it has become a routine part of poisoning protocols. Huge doses of activated charcoal are given with the intent of clearing the harmful substance out of the gastrointestinal tract.
It is made by burning a source of carbon such as wood, debris, or better yet, coconut shells. The high temperature removes all the oxygen and activates it with gases like steam. What is produced is a highly adsorbent material with millions of tiny pores that capture, bind, and remove poisons, heavy metals, chemicals, and intestinal gases which have thousands of times more weight than the charcoal itself. The porous surface has a negative electric charge that attracts positively charged unwanted toxins and gas.
It is mainly used to remove toxins from the body, and has been known to be to used for the following purposes:
However, and the main reason we don’t use it in our juices is that Activated charcoal doesn’t discriminate between the healthful chemical components of food, and any unwanted chemicals in the digestive system. Activated charcoal appears to bond vitamins like ascorbic acid (vitamin C), niacin, pyridoxine (vitamin B6), thiamine (vitamin B1) and biotin, so it has the potential to make food and drinks you consume actually less nutritious, not more.
